Bombay HC And Delhi HC Start Uploading Judgments Translated In Marathi And Hindi Language

The Bombay High Court has yesterday started uploading and publishing its judgments being translated into the Marathi language on its website. Similarly, the Delhi High Court has translated seven of its judgments in the Hindi language from the period January 1 to February 28.

The Bombay High Court has provided a separate tab on its website where one can access judgments in the Marathi language. The Marathi translations of three judgments have been uploaded so far which were pronounced on February 20, 2023.

The tab named 'Nivadak Nirnay' i.e., selected judgments is available on the website’s home page. The translations of judgments pronounced by Division Benches of Justice D H Thakur and Justice Kamal Khata, Justice D H Thakur and Justice Abhay Ahuja, and Justice A S Gadkari and Justice P D Naik are available on the website.

While for the Delhi High Court, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad has made available the judgments in Hindi langauge.

A clarification was also issued by the Courts that the translations shall be used only for the purpose of helping litigants or parties for understanding judgments in their mother tongue, rather than for other purposes such as execution or enforcement of the Court directives.

However, English would continue to be the official language of the Court.

Earlier, this year, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud had said that the judgments of the Supreme Court would be translated into regional languages.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also lauded the initiative of the Kerala High Court of publishing its judgments in the Malayalam language.
