Centre Notifies Appointment Of Chief Justices For Eight High Courts

The Ministry of Law and Justice on September 21, 2024, has notified the appointment of Chief Justices to eight High Courts, following recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium.

The appointed Chief Justices are as follows:

  • Justice Manmohan, who was serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the regular Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
  • Justice Rajiv Shakdher, also from the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • Justice Suresh Kait, another judge from the Delhi High Court, will now serve as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, currently serving on the Calcutta High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
  • Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, from the Bombay High Court, has been designated as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
  • Justice Tashi Rabstan, who was acting as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, has been appointed as the regular Chief Justice of that court.
  • Justice Shriram Kalpathi Rajendran, also from the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
  • Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, who was previously the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, has been transferred to the Jharkhand High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium made its initial recommendations for these appointments on July 11. However, on September 17, the Collegium revised its earlier recommendations concerning the appointment of Chief Justices for four High Courts.
