Update: 2024-08-14 05:00 GMT

The Supreme Court Collegium consisting of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai resolved to recommend the names of two additional judges of Andhra Pradesh High Court as permanent judges of that court.

The names of the judges recommended are:

  • Smt. Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa, and
  • Shri Justice Venuthurumalli Gopala Krishna Rao.

On May 16, 2024, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh Collegium unanimously endorsed the appointment of these Additional Judges as permanent Judges.

Since the comments from the Chief Minister and the Governor of Andhra Pradesh have not been received, the Department of Justice has proceeded with forwarding the recommendation by invoking paragraph 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure. This provision allows the Minister of Law and Justice to assume that the Governor and Chief Minister have no objections to the proposal if their comments are not received within the stipulated time frame.

The notification dated August 13, 2024 read, “In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend that (i) Smt Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa, and (ii) Shri Justice Venuthurumalli Gopala Krishna Rao, Additional Judges, be appointed as permanent Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh against the existing vacancies.”
