Kapil Sibal Attends INDI Alliance Election Campaign Meeting In Chandigarh As SCBA President: Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai Seeks Action Against 'Misconduct'

Update: 2024-05-30 08:00 GMT

Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai has sought action against Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal for attending an election campaign meeting in the Main Bar Room of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh in his capacity as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

The poster for the event that was held on May 29 contained the logo of the Indian National Congress, Aam Admi Party and the INDI Alliance, with the photo of Kapil Sibal as the President of the SCBA.

The event was held in support of Manish Tiwari, Advocate and the INDI Alliance candidate from the Chandigarh constituency. The event was an interaction with Kapil Sibal for lawyers and was held inside the High Court premises.

"Mr #Sibal, as the president of the #SupremeCourt Bar Association, should refrain from participating in political programs. He should not rival Dr. Adish Aggarwala in misusing the office of the SCBA president. The #SCBA Executive Committee should address this misconduct.", posted Pradeep Rai on 'X' along with the poster of the event.

Pradeep Rai had lost the election for the post of the President of the SCBA to Kapil Sibal. During his campaign, Sibal was critical of the then President of the Association, Dr. Adish Aggarwala for his pro central government stands.

In reply to one of the comments to his post that there is no restriction on the SCBA President attending political events, Rai said, "He may do so if he is not attending the program as SCBA president. Let him attend it as India supported independent MP of #RajyaSabha and former minister."

When the SCBA election campaign was at its peak, a plea was filed by Advocate Kumud Lata Das before the Supreme Court for cancellation of the candidature of Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai for the post of President. Rai appeared before the Court and submitted that the plea was moved at the instance of Kapil Sibal. The Court refused to entertain the plea.

Sibal was elected the President of the SCBA with 1066 votes, while Pradeep Kumar Rai came second with 689 votes.
