New Criminal Laws Replacing IPC, CrPC And Evidence Act Will Come Into Force On July 1: MHA Issues Notification

The Central Government has notified today that the new criminal laws replacing Indian Penal Code 1860 (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 (IEA) shall come into force on July 1, 2024.

In a historic development, the President of India Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the three new Criminal laws which will now be called 'The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023', 'The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023' and 'The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023'.

Three notifications have been issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs today on its official website with regard to the said date.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (45 of 2023), the Central Government hereby appoints the 1st day of July, 2024 as the date on which the provisions of the said Sanhita, except the provision of sub-section (2) of section 106, shall come into force”, the notification read.

Similarly, the dates for the other two criminal laws have been notified.

The Ministry has clarified that the new criminal laws shall come into force on the said date except for the provision of Section 106(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Earlier, on December 12 last year, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had introduced in the Lok Sabha the revised three criminal reform bills.

On August 11 last year, the Central Government had introduced the Bills in the Lok Sabha.
