NGT Forms Committee For Rejuvenation Of Ludhiana's Historic Village's Ponds Amid Pollution Concerns
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a Committee to look into the rejuvenation of five ponds in the historic Alamgir village in Punjab's Ludhiana district.
A Bench comprising Judicial Member Arun Kumar Tyagi and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel directed the committee to submit the factual and action-taken report within two months.
The applicant had submitted a letter petition by email, requesting intervention to protect the villagers of Alamgir, District Ludhiana, from a polluted atmosphere that is impacting their health and dignity.
The historic village of Alamgir, visited by the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, is home to five ponds causing unhygienic conditions for residents. Encroachment, black water, and garbage have affected the ponds, impacting the lives of over 5000 people, including students and Scheduled Castes villagers.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) found the claims in the application to be valid and concerning environmental issues arising from the implementation of certain enactments listed in Schedule I to the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010.
NGT considered it appropriate to form a Joint Committee including MoEF&CC, Chandigarh's Integrated Regional Office, PSPCB, and Ludhiana's DM. Committee was directed to meet within a week, visit the site, involve the applicant, verify facts, remove encroachments, and rejuvenate the ponds lawfully. The Committee was directed to ensure compliance with order dated November 18, 2020 passed by this Tribunal in OA No. 325/2015, Lt. Col. Sarvadaman Singh Oberoi v. Union of India & Ors., regarding rejuvenation of ponds and also implementation of ‘The Mission Amrit Sarovar’, launched by Government of India. Report is to be submitted in two months to judicial-ngt@gov.in in searchable PDF/OCR format.
The case will be further considered on November 06, 2023.
