Former Supreme Court Judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian Appointed As Chairperson Of National Human Rights Commission

The President of India has appointed Justice V. Ramasubramanian, a former Supreme Court judge, as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs notifying his appointment stated, “I enclose herewith the warrant signed by the Hon’ble President of India for the appointment as Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission in terms of Section 3(2)(a) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019 and subsequently retired in 2023.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd.) Arun Kumar Mishra earlier occupied the position of the Chairperson of the NHRC before he retired in June 2024.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court in 2006 and as a permanent Judge in 2009. He was transferred on his own request to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in 2016. After the bifurcation and the creation of a separate High Court for the State of Andhra Pradesh, he was retained as a Judge of the High Court of Telangana at Hyderabad in 2019. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2019.
