The Ministry of Law and Justice has approved the appointment of Justice D. Krishnakumar, a judge at the Madras High Court, as the next Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Justice Siddharth Mridul, the current Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, is scheduled to retire on November 21. Following his retirement, Justice Krishnakumar will take over as Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his appointment in a resolution dated November 18, which specified that Justice Krishnakumar, who is presently serving as a judge of the Madras High Court, would assume the role of Chief Justice of Manipur once Justice Mridul steps down.

Justice Krishnakumar was appointed to the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016. He is the senior-most puisne judge at the court and is set to retire on May 21, 2025. His legal career includes extensive experience in handling a range of cases, particularly in civil, constitutional, and service law, with a specialization in constitutional matters. Additionally, he hails from a Backward Community, adding to the diversity of the judicial leadership in India.

The notification dated November 20, 2024 read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice D. Krishnakumar, Judge, Madras High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office, consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Siddharth Mridul, present Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court on 21.11.2024.”
