The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified the appointment of three advocates as judges of the Gujarat High Court.

The three newly appointed judges are:

  1. Sanjeev Jayendra Thaker
  2. Deeptendra Narayan Ray (commonly referred to as D.N. Ray)
  3. Maulik Jitendra Shelat

The Supreme Court Collegium, comprising of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice B.R. Gavai, had recommended these names on August 13, 2024.

The Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court had, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, initially recommended these advocates for judicial appointment on December 22. Notably, the Collegium observed that neither the Chief Minister nor the Governor of Gujarat had communicated their views regarding this recommendation.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court Collegium conducted its own review, focusing on the merit and suitability of the candidates. It was noted that the consultee-judges from Gujarat had also expressed a favorable opinion about the qualifications and suitability of the three advocates for the position. This thorough assessment led to the final recommendation for their appointment as judges.

The notification dated October 08, 2024 read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri (i) Sanjeev Jayendra Thaker, (ii) Deeptendra Narayan Ray and (iii) Maulik Jitendra Shelat, to be Judges of the Gujarat High Court, in that order of seniority, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”
