Kerala HC Permits Govt To Pay ₹11 Crores To Keltron For Installation Of AI Cameras For Detecting Traffic Violations & Reducing Accidents

The Kerala High Court directed the State Government to release the first installment of Rs 11 Crores in favor of Keltron for installing cameras for the fully Automated Traffic enforcement system in order to detect traffic violations and reduce accidents.

The Court allowed the state to make the payment as the cameras have already been installed, they were working and challans had been issued.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice A.J Desai and Justice V.G Arun noted, “Keeping in view the fact that cameras have already been installed by concerned respondents which are working and challans have been issued, we permit the State authorities to release the first installment to the tune of Rs.11,79,11,440/- to be released in favour of KELTRON. The said release should be subject to the outcome of further orders to be passed in the present writ petition”.

Senior Advocate George Poonthottam appeared for the Petitioners, and Advocate General K. Gopalakrishna Kurup, Senior Government Pleader V. Manu, State Attorney N Manoj Kumar, and M.A Zohra Standing Counsel appeared for the Respondents.

A Writ Petition was filed by the MLA of the Opposition Party seeking a stay on the implementation of a fully Automated Traffic enforcement system for Safe Kerala. The System was installed to regulate the traffic by levying a fine on the public.

The Court noted that the cameras have been installed and are working properly. The Court directed the State Authorities to release the first installment to tune Rs 11,79,11,440/- to be released in favor of Keltron.

Accordingly, the Court listed the matter for October 18.
