Breaking: Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointed Chief Justice Of India With Effect From November 11
|Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed the Chief Justice of India by the President of India with effect from November 11, 2024.
The current Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud is to retire on November 10.
"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024", posted Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on 'X' some time back.
Justice Khanna will be the Chief Justice of India till May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019. He was a puisne Judge of the Delhi High Court at the time of his elevation to the Supreme Court.
He was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006.
Justice Khanna was born on May 14, 1960. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. Initially, he practiced in the District Courts at the TisHazari complex, Delhi, and later, in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals in fields as diverse as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.
He had a long tenure as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department. In 2004, he was appointed as the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He had also appeared and argued in a number of criminal cases at the Delhi High Court as an Additional Public Prosecutor and as an amicus curie.
After Justice Khanna, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai would become the CJI for a short period till his retirement on November 11, 2025. Justice Gavai's tenure as CJI would be followed by Justice Surya Kant, who would have a substantially longer tenure till February 9, 2027.
