The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a petition seeking the arrest of Nupur Sharma for alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

A Bench comprising of Chief Justice U. U. Lalit, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat and Justice P. S. Narasimha told the Petitioner that the direction sought, if granted, will have far-reaching consequences and suggested to the Petitioner that he may withdraw his petition.

The Court was also not inclined to entertain the alternative prayer of the Petitioner to implement the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in Tehseen Poonawalla's case.

The Petition was filed by a Lawyer Abu Sohel seeking the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Mohamad.

Multiple FIRs were registered against Nupur Sharma for the alleged blasphemous remarks during a television debate.

The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice J B Pardiwala had made some controversial remarks while hearing Sharma's plea seeking the transfer of FIRs registered against her across the country to Delhi where the first FIR was registered. The Bench had remarked that the outburst by Nupur Sharma was responsible for the incident of Udaipur where a tailor was beheaded on video for allegedly supporting Nupur Sharma. The petition was then withdrawn by Sharma.

On July 19, the same Bench stayed coercive action against Nupur Sharma in the FIRs that have been registered against her and any FIR that may be registered against her in future for the same incident.

Subsequently, on August 10, the Bench directed the clubbing and transferring of FIRs registered against Nupur Sharma to Delhi Police.
