Breaking: Supreme Court Stays Coercive Action Against Navika Kumar In Nupur Sharma Remark FIRs

The Supreme Court's Bench comprising of Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli today ordered as an interim measure that no coercive measure should be taken against the Times Now anchor Navika Kumar in the FIRs impugned by her and any FIRs that my be registered in future in relation to the alleged blasphemous remarks by Nupur Sharma on the former's show.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi appearing for Navika Kumar said that the anchor did not say anything. She doused the fire by saying that constitution of the country has to be followed. I have said nothing and I have been roped in several FIRs. There is no FIR which says that I ever said anything, he said.

"Delhi police have given me security since there is a threat against me", Rohtagi added.

"They don't append the FIR, the first FIR was in Calcutta", Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy appearing for the state of Bengal argued opposing the petition.

"What is this extra interest of the state of West Bengal?", Rohtagi replied.

Navika Kumar had moved a Writ Petition seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against her, relating to controversial remarks made by the now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Mohammad.

Navika has stated in her plea that multiple FIRs have been filed against her in various parts of the country. She had sought that either the FIRs be quashed or they be clubbed together.

On May 26, Navika moderated the debate in which Nupur Sharma made the remarks about Prophet Mohammad which led to violence and outrage in various parts of the country.

The Apex Court had stayed coercive action against Nupur Sharma in a similar petition filed by her seeking that the FIRs filed against her be clubbed and transferred to Delhi. Earlier, the Bench comprising of Justice Surya Kant and Justice J. B. Pardiwala had made some controversial oral remarks against Nupur Sharma and she had withdrawn her petition. The subsequent order was passed on a petition filed by Sharma for reviving her petition.
