The Supreme Court Collegium consisting of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai resolved to recommend the names of three distinguished advocates for elevation to the Delhi High Court. The recommended candidates are:

  • Ajay Digpaul
  • Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar
  • Shwetasree Majumder

According to the resolution, on October 25, 2023, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, after consulting with the two most senior colleagues of the court, proposed these three advocates for judicial appointments to the High Court.

The Collegium thoroughly reviewed and evaluated the documentation provided and considered the observations made by the Department of Justice regarding these candidates. After this comprehensive assessment, the Collegium has deemed all three advocates qualified and suitable for the position of High Court judge.

Currently, the Delhi High Court operates with 39 judges, which is below its sanctioned strength of 60 judges.

The notification dated August 21, 2024 read, “In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend that S/Shri (i) Ajay Digpaul, (ii) Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, and (iii) Ms Shwetasree Majumder, Advocates, be appointed as Judges of the High Court of Delhi. Their inter se seniority be fixed as per the existing practice.”
