Disturbing And Unprecedented Worrisome Scenario In Calcutta High Court Precincts: WB Governor Writes To CM
|The Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankar had written to the Chief Minister of the state Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday seeking a meeting and stating that he is "deeply concerned at extremely disturbing and unprecedented worrisome scenario unfolding today in the hallowed precincts of High Court at Calcutta".
The Governor also referred to the "recent spate of heinous crime against women and continual deteriorating law and order in the state".
The Governor was referring to the recent incident in Calcutta High Court outside the Courtroom of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay in which a group of Advocates affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) tried to forcefully stop others from entering the Courtroom. Some Advocate had sat on dharna outside the Courtroom.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had ordered a CBI probe into allegations of corruption in the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff in state government and aided schools.
Earlier, a resolution moved in the Bar Association of Calcutta High Court against Justice Gangopadhyay could not be passed since the general body was dissolved owing to an unruly situation. The President of the Association had written to the Chief Justice stating that no resolution was passed by the Association.
In his letter, the Governor has also said that, "You would agree that in a system governed by constitution and rule of law, denial of access to justice and obstruction in the functioning of the Courts sounds death knell of democracy."
