A day after the attack on the convoy of Union Minister Nisith Pramanik in Dinhata area of West Bengal’s Cooch Behar District, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has said that such anarchy will never be tolerated.

The Governor has sought an action taken report immediately from the law enforcement authorities.

“Any laxity in the maintenance of law and order will lead to chaos and anarchy, which will never be tolerated”, said the Governor in a press release on Sunday.

The convoy of Pramanik was attacked allegedly by the TMC (Trinamool Congress) party’s supporters. As per the Minister, the convoy was not just pelted with stones but shots were also fired and bombs hurled. TMC supporters showed black flags to Pramanik when he was on the way to attend a BJP programme, and thereafter, clashes broke out between supporters of both parties, injuring several people.

In a press release issued by the Raj Bhavan, Governor said that he personally discussed about this matter with the Minister.

“It is shocking that such incidents happened in a land which is known for its refined culture and enviable history of civilized conduct”, he said.

Bose further said that a protest is a part of democracy but violence is not a part of civilized conduct. He also said that anti-social elements which try to take the law into their hands will be dealt with sternly and violence will be rooted-out ruthlessly.

“Governor will not be a mute witness to any deterioration of Law and Order anywhere, anytime in the State, and strong and effective intervention will follow to ensure that the rot is stemmed in the root effectively, and peace and harmony restored”, he asserted.

He further asserted that the rule of law will be established with an iron fist in a velvet glove and democracy will not be allowed to degenerate into mobocracy.

The Governor said, “As Governor, it is my duty to ensure that West Bengal does not slip into a 'soft state'.”

Last year, the then Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to withdraw her alleged unconstitutional declaration of jihad against the BJP.

"It defies logic and reason as to how one under the Oath of Constitution and holding the position of Chief Minister could make such pernicious declaration of 'jihad' against a political party. This is death knell of democracy and rule of law", the Governor had said in his letter.
