Non-Bailable Warrant Issued Against Varavara Rao In 2005 Case Of Naxalites Killing Six Policemen

A non-bailable warrant has been issued against Varavara Rao by an Additional Sessions Court in Madhugiri in Tumakuru district, Karnataka.

The case in which this warrant is issued is related to an attack on policemen in Tumakuru in 2005 in which Rao and Gaddar (an activist-poet) were among the accused.

Advocate S. Balan representing Rao said that he would move the High Court challenging the non-bailable warrant so issued by the Additional Sessions Court.

Varavara Rao is an accused in the case which is related to the attack by the Naxalites on a police team killing six of them and a civilian at Venkatammanahalli in Pavagada Taluk in Tumakuru district on February 10, 2005.

At present, Rao is out on bail on medical grounds since February 2021, granted by the Bombay High Court with a condition that he should remain within the jurisdiction of the Special Court for National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Rao is an accused in the Bhima-Koregaon case relating to violence that happened during the annual celebratory gathering on January 1, 2018, to mark the battle of Bhima Koregaon, fought 200 years ago. The violence resulted in the death of one person.

He, along with other co-accused, was charged and arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for the alleged Elgar Parishad-Maoist link.
