Breaking: Supreme Court Dismisses Zakia Jafri's Plea Against Clean Chit To Narendra Modi By SIT In 2002 Gujarat Riots

The Supreme Court today pronounced its judgment dismissing the plea filed by Zakia Jafri seeking a probe into the larger conspiracy in the 2002 Gujarat riots and challenging the 'clean chit' given by the SIT to the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

The Bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice CT Ravikumar said "we uphold the decision of the Magistrate accepting the report of the SIT as it is and rejecting the protest petition".

The Bench held that there was no infraction to the rule of law on the part of the Courts below. "The appeal is deviod of merit and deserves to be dismissed", the Bench pronounced.

The Court had reserved its verdict in December 2021 after a lengthy hearing when Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal had appeared for Zakia, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi for the SIT and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for the state of Gujarat.

In February 2012, the SIT filed a closure report concluding that there was no prosecutable evidence against Narendra Modi and others, including senior government officials.

Zakia Jafri is the wife of Congress leader Ehsan Jafri who was killed during the riot at Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad in 2002, a day after the Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra killing 59 people.

The SIT was appointed by the Supreme Court to probe into the riots and the Gujarat High Court had upheld the report of the SIT.
