The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the elevation of three judicial officers to judges of the Madras High Court.

The newly appointed judges are:

  • R Poornima
  • M Jothiraman
  • Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete

These appointments come after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their names for elevation on September 10. The Collegium's resolution indicated that a Supreme Court judge, well-acquainted with the workings of the Madras High Court, was consulted to evaluate the candidates' fitness and suitability for the positions.

Significantly, the resolution noted that Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete's elevation would improve minority representation on the High Court Bench.

The notification dated September 21, 2024 read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Ms. R. Poornima, (ii) Shri M. Jothiraman and (iii) Dr. Augustine Devadoss Maria Clete, to be Additional Judges of the Madras High Court, for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”
