The Delhi High Court directed the implementation of the recommendations for alleviating and curing the defects in the current medical system of AIIMS to avail financial assistance.

Key recommendations include upgrading hospital websites to provide real-time updates on available medicines, implants, and devices, appointment of nodal officers in all public hospitals to assist in availing financial assistance, and implementation of a single-window mechanism for patient convenience.

A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora observed, “This Court accepts the recommendations made by the Committee constituted by this Court in the present writ petition and directs the Chief Secretary, GNCTD to oversee the implementation of the recommendations by the said Committee.

Advocate Ashok Agarwal represented the petitioner, while PC Satya Ranajan Swain appeared for the respondents.

Earlier, the petitioner sought direction to the authorities to perform hip and knee replacement surgery on the petitioner free of cost.

During the proceedings, a committee was constituted by the court to devise recommendations for improving the current medical system's defects in providing financial assistance. The committee, in its report, outlined several key recommendations to facilitate easier access to medical treatment and financial assistance for patients, especially those belonging to economically weaker sections of society.

The report additionally proposed the development of software to expedite the application process, initiation of rate card preparation for medical equipment, and sensitisation of hospital staff to create a patient-friendly environment.

To ensure the implementation of the said recommendations, this Court directs the Chief Secretary, GNCTD to convene monthly meetings till all the recommendations get implemented and action taken report shall be filed by the Chief Secretary, GNCTD on or before 15th October, 2024,” the Court directed.

Accordingly, the High Court listed the matter for further hearing on October 22, 2024.
