Threat To CBI Judge To Release TMC Leader Anubrata Mondal Mentioned Before Supreme Court
The issue relating to the threat to Special CBI Judge Rajesh Chakraborty in Asansol who has been hearing the case against TMC leader Anubrata Mondal for cattle smuggling was mentioned before the Bench led by CJI NV Ramana in Supreme Court today morning.
However, the Bench did not respond to the mentioning. The Chief Justice responded by asking to stop mentionings and to call matters on the list.
The Special CBI Judge had written a letter on Monday to the District Judge alleging that he has received a threat letter pressurizing him to release Mondal on bail, who allegedly is a close aide of Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee.
The Judge had mentioned in his letter that he has been threatened by one Bappa Chatterjee who has claimed that if Anubrata Mondal is not released, then Judge's family members would be implicated in NDPS case with commercial quantity.
The Judge had prayed before the District Judge to take note of the facts and transmit the same to Registrar, Judicial Service, Appellate Side, Calcutta High Court.
The TMC leader was arrested in the cattle smuggling case and was produced in the Asansol CBI Court today.
It is reported that the CBI has frozen fixed deposits worth Rs. 16.97 crore allegedly belonging to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal and his family members in connection with its ongoing probe into the Bengal cattle smuggling across the Indo-Bangladesh border. The fixed deposits were detected by the central agency officials during their investigation.
The TMC leader had earlier sought direction for no coercive steps urging that he was suffering from a variety of ailments. He had also prayed that CBI be asked to question him through video conferencing from his residence at Bolpur in Birbhum.
He was arrested on August 12 and was remanded to CBI custody. Today, Mondal was remanded by the CBI Court to 14 day jail custody in relation to the cattle smuggling case.
