Today, after more than 50 days of summer holiday, as the Supreme Court reopened, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud announced several infrastructural developments that were undertaken during the Court's summer vacations to enhance convenience for members of the bar and litigants.

"The space in front of Court Rooms 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 is being completely air-conditioned for the convenience of the members of the bar and the litigants. We have been in touch with some of the most leading agencies in the country who are specialised in that, because it is a heritage building. We have gone to IIT Delhi to ensure that the design is secure and safe," the CJI said.

The CJI expressed that the air conditioning work, initially expected to be completed by the end of the vacation, is taking a bit longer and will require a few more weeks. "I was expecting that the work would be complete by the end of the vacation. It is taking a bit longer—maybe a few more weeks," he said.

Additionally, the CJI announced that two waiting rooms near the grand staircase, set up during the COVID-19 pandemic, have been fully restored and are now available for use.

The facility for the Registrar's Court has been expanded to operate full-time from Monday to Friday during court hours, instead of on a rotational basis. "We have now expanded the facility for the Registrar's Court. Now there will be a full time Registrar Court working, right from Monday to Friday during court hours instead of rotations," he said.

“We had just inaugurated the lunch room for Senior Advocates a short while ago. The Women’s Bar room is almost ready, which I hope will be ready in the next 2-3 days,” said the CJI. Furthermore, the CJI said that the cubicles for lawyers are also completely ready and are expected to be allocated by Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Chief Justice highlighted that a total of 42 projects were in progress over the summer vacation.

It is to be noted that the Supreme Court went on summer vacation on May 20, 2024, and reopened today, July 8, 2024.
